The Coptic Quarter: This iconic neighborhood is home to a large number of Christian churches as well as historical sites dating back to the period between the decline of the Pharaonic religion and the arrival of Islam, at a time when Egypt was predominantly Christian. Coptic Cairo developed around the fort of Babylon, the remains of whose walls still serve as foundations for some buildings.
The Hanging Church, also called the Church of the Virgin Mary, was built in the ninth century. It owes its name to its peculiar structure, resting partly on the walls of the Babylonian Fort.
A little further on, in the heart of the Coptic quarter, other important religious buildings can be visited, including the Church of St. Sergius, dating from the fifth century. According to tradition, it was erected on a crypt where the Holy Family – Jesus, Mary and Joseph – found refuge during their passage through Egypt.
Even further away, the Ben Ezra Synagogue stands as the oldest in Cairo, built in the ninth century. This place is associated with several historical and religious accounts: it is claimed to be the site of Jeremiah's temple or the place where the Pharaoh's daughter is said to have discovered Moses among the reeds.

Medieval Islamic Cairo:Â Cairo is known as the city of a thousand minarets due to the dizzying number of mosques and religious buildings built by sultans and emirs during the Middle Ages.
The Citadel of Saladin is an imposing medieval fortress perched on the hill of Mokattam, it was erected at the end of the twelfth century by the famous general Saladin to protect Cairo from Crusader invasions. Its remarkable architecture is distinguished by an imposing limestone perimeter wall and towers with various geometric shapes.
Dominating the silhouette of the citadel is the majestic alabaster mosque of Mohamed Ali, in the Ottoman style which was completed in 1857. From the heights of the fortress, a spectacular panorama is offered to visitors, revealing a breathtaking view of Cairo and its surroundings.

The Sultan Hassan Mosque: a jewel of Mamluk
architecture Located at the foot of the Cairo Citadel, the Sultan Hassan Mosque is a monumental building from the fourteenth century, considered one of the finest examples of Mamluk architecture. Its construction was ordered by Sultan Hassan ibn al-Nassir Muhammad ibn Qalawun in 1356 and completed in 1363.
The building impresses with its grandiose proportions: its walls reach 36 meters in height and its main minaret, one of the tallest in Cairo, rises to 81 meters.
The mihrab and minbar are richly decorated with marble, mosaics and Koranic inscriptions. The building also houses the mausoleum of Sultan Hassan, topped by a huge decorated dome.

The El-Rifai Mosque: between tradition and modernity
Located just in front of the Sultan Hassan Mosque, near the Cairo Citadel, the El-Rifai Mosque is a nineteenth-century architectural masterpiece, which stands out for its mix of traditional Islamic styles and modern influences.
The building impresses with its richly decorated monumental façade, its massive columns, its elegant arcades, and its huge dome that dominates the whole. The interior is just as sumptuous, with refined decorations combining marble, gilding and geometric patterns, typical of Islamic art.

The Khan el-Khalili Souk is located within the walls built in 1087 to defend the Fatimid city of Al-Qahira (Cairo). It is a real labyrinth of lively alleys, craft shops and traditional workshops; A mesmerizing mix of colors, sounds and scents. The cobbled streets are lined with buildings with ancient facades, arcades and mashrabiyas typical of Islamic architecture.
One of the most famous places in the souk is Café El Fishawi, also known as "the café of mirrors". This historic café is a perfect place to enjoy a mint tea or Arabic coffee while observing the bustling market.
