From Cairo, discover the Bahriya Oasis, the Black Desert and the White Desert 3 nights / 4 days
After about a three-hour drive from Cairo, we’ll reach the Bahariya Oasis. This vast natural depression of 2,000 km² has been known since Pharaonic times for its renowned wine. Even today, it seduces with its palm groves, olive groves, orchards, market gardening, its many hot springs suitable for swimming and its archaeological sites.
Then to the White Desert, 80 km from Bahariya. The bivouac will be set up in this magical place with bright white chalky rock formations sculpted by the wind and a spectacular sunset in a breathtaking setting.
Tour Itinerary & Description
Pick up from your hotel in Cairo around 7 am, then depart for the Bahariya Oasis.
After a journey of about 5 hours, arrive at the oasis and check in at your hotel.
Lunch,
followed by a walk through this green oasis, which will allow you to admire its vast expanses of date palms and olive trees, as well as its traditional dwellings built of mud bricks and dried straw.
A swim in the Kassaa Well, one of the many natural hot springs that characterize the Bahariya Oasis, will allow you to relax your muscles and relieve rheumatism.
On the edge of the oasis, you can admire magnificent natural reliefs:
The dunes and the salt lake of Marron
This region is distinguished by a fascinating landscape, where dunes and sand mix to create a magical setting. Walking barefoot on the sand is known to eliminate negative energy and provide a peaceful state of mind.
In the heart of this enchanting setting is the salt lake of Marron, formed by the waters from the oasis' many natural springs and irrigation. Its high salinity comes from soil salts carried away by groundwater. This lake is also a site of attraction for migratory birds, which flock there every year by the thousands.
The two hills of Dest and Maghrafa
These two impressive formations, each about 50 meters high, stand in the heart of the Black Desert, facing each other. In 1914, the German researcher Stromer discovered the fossilized remains of a dinosaur at the foot of the Dest hill. A century later, an American scientific mission reconstructed the structure of this dinosaur, considered by geologists to be one of the largest ever discovered, dating back about 95 million years. Since then, the area has become a research centre for vertebrate paleontology.
At the end of the afternoon, climb the Montagne Noire or the Montagne des Anglais to enjoy a magnificent sunset, the highest point of the oasis, offering a breathtaking view of this sublime landscape.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by 4x4 Jeep to the Black Desert located about 30 km south of the Bahariya Oasis, to discover the bewitching beauty of this unique desert.
The Black Desert is a vast expanse of black volcanic hills, a true geological gem offering a spectacular view of an almost lunar landscape. It was formed as a result of volcanic activity that occurred several thousand years ago, which explains the presence of hardened lava rocks that cover the entire region.
You can admire majestic hills of black stones, as well as vast plains with yellow, brown and orange hues. The Black Desert is one of the most unusual desert regions in the world.
Some of the spectacular sights in this area include:
The hill of Marsous, an ancient volcanic crater dating back millions of years. It is entirely covered in jasper, a volcanic rock naturally distributed on the surface of the hill, drawing like wrinkles of time on its sides. Its name, Marsous, means "stacked" in Arabic, in reference to the visible superposition of the rock strata.
The Panorama Hill, which can be climbed to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Black Desert.
Lunch in the nearby El Haize Oasis, then swimming in a natural hot spring.
Continue the journey to the White Desert, located about 80 km away. On the way, visit must-see sites:
The Crystal Mountain: a natural arch-shaped formation, crossed by veins of sparkling quartz. Its walls shine with a thousand sparkles thanks to transparent or opaque white crystals, creating a dazzling spectacle under the sun's rays. It is one of the most impressive natural wonders of the Egyptian desert.
The Aqabat Valley: a huge natural cirque surrounded by mountains, where you can observe the famous desert flowers — tiny black stones made of pyrite, sculpted by the action of wind and sand. An absolutely splendid landscape!
BBQ dinner and night in bivouac under the stars.
Breakfast, then hike in the Aqabat Valley.
We continue on the road to Ain el-Serw, an underground spring surrounded by date palms and other species of trees, forming a small oasis in the heart of the desert.
What makes the Ain el-Serw spring so special is its strange behaviour: it remains motionless, like a silent fountain, until a living being – man, animal or even bird – approaches it. It is for this reason that it is nicknamed the "magic spring".
Breakfast (or snack depending on the time) before heading back to the White Desert.
The White Desert is a magical place, unique in the world. Originally, this region was a natural depression covered by the sea, several million years ago.
Today, it is made up of chalky rock formations, long shaped by the erosion of wind and rain. These stones, of a dazzling whiteness, gave its name to the desert.
You can discover strange and whimsical natural shapes: mushrooms, sphinxes, pyramids, towers, and many more.
The sunset is an exceptional moment, sublimated by this lunar setting: thousands of immaculate white mounds seem to float in a sea of sand, creating an almost unreal atmosphere.
