From Cairo, discover the Bahriya Oasis, the Black Desert and the White Desert 3 nights / 4 days
After about a three-hour drive from Cairo, we’ll reach the Bahariya Oasis. This vast natural depression of 2,000 km² has been known since Pharaonic times for its renowned wine. Even today, it seduces with its palm groves, olive groves, orchards, market gardening, its many hot springs suitable for swimming and its archaeological sites.
Then to the White Desert, 80 km from Bahariya. The bivouac will be set up in this magical place with bright white chalky rock formations sculpted by the wind and a spectacular sunset in a breathtaking setting.
Tour Itinerary & Description
Pick up from your hotel, then depart for the Bahariya Oasis, a journey of about 5 hours.
Arrival and check-in at your hotel.
Lunch, then departure to visit the oasis: walk in the green oasis of Bahariya to admire its forests of date palms and olive trees, as well as its traditional clay brick dwellings. Swimming in one of the many natural hot springs.
Enjoy a moment of relaxation in the Kassaa well, a hot spring renowned for relieving rheumatism and relaxing muscles.
The dunes and the salt lake of Marron: this set of dunes is located at the ends of the Bahariya oasis. This captivating landscape combines sand dunes and magical panorama. Walking barefoot here would allow you to free yourself from negative energy. At the heart of this setting is the salt lake of Marron, fed by natural springs, irrigation and agricultural drainage. Its high salinity comes from soil salts carried away by lowland waters. The lake is also a crossing point for thousands of migratory birds each year.
The two hills of Dest and Maghrafa – two 50-metre-high hills, located in the heart of the Black Desert, side by side. In 1914, the German explorer Störmer discovered the fossilized remains of a dinosaur at the foot of the pyramidal hill of Dest. A century later, an American scientific mission uncovered the complete structure of this dinosaur, one of the largest ever discovered, dated to about 95 million years ago. Since then, the area has become a centre for scientific research in paleontology.
At the end of the afternoon, climb the Montagne Noire (known as the Montagne des Anglais), to admire a sublime sunset and enjoy a panoramic view of the oasis.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by all-terrain vehicle (30 km) to discover:
The Black Desert: a region made up of mountains of shiny black volcanic rock, offering a special charm at the first and last light of day. The result of ancient volcanic eruptions, this desert features majestic hills covered in hardened lava rocks, as well as large plains with yellow, brown, and orange hues. One of the most unusual desert landscapes in the world.
Marsous Hill: an ancient volcanic crater covered in jasper. This material forms natural streaks reminiscent of wrinkles, hence its name "Marsous", meaning "stacked" in Arabic.
Panorama Hill: accessible for a breathtaking view of the Black Desert.
Lunch break in the Bedouin village of El-Heiz and swimming in a hot spring.
Crystal Mountain: A dramatic arch-shaped rock formation, streaked with quartz and sparkling calcite crystals. The sun's rays reveal magical sparkles.
Aqabat: a vast mountain cirque where you can admire the famous "desert flowers" — small black pyrite stones shaped by the wind and sand, in the shape of flowers. A remarkable natural spectacle.
Ain El Serw: an underground spring surrounded by palm trees and other trees, forming an intimate oasis. Called "the magic spring", because it would only gush out in the presence of a living being.
Arrival in the white desert at the end of the afternoon.
This unique natural site, a remnant of a prehistoric sea, is made up of white chalk formations shaped by erosion. These natural sculptures evoke mushrooms, pyramids, sphinxes, towers, etc.
Installation of the bivouac in a lunar and captivating setting, with a magnificent sunset tinged with pink and mauve.
BBQ dinner around the fire and a magical night under the stars.
A gentle awakening, sublimated by a spectacular sunrise.
Breakfast and unreal walk in the white desert.
Depart for Ain Khadra, one of the oldest Roman springs in the White Desert, in the heart of Farafra. This site was once the place where the first inhabitants lived before the foundation of the modern city.
Lunch and then drive to the oasis of Dakhla.
Arrival and check-in at your hotel.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast, then visit of:
The village of Qalamoun: a medieval village with steep streets and mud-brick houses, perched on a hill offering a panoramic view.
The city of Al-Qasr: an ancient medieval town made of mud, made up of narrow streets, secret passages and houses with traditional architecture. Dominated by the 13th-century mosque of Nasr el-Din, with a minaret reminiscent of those of sub-Saharan Africa.
Swim in a natural spring and have lunch at a local restaurant.
Departure for the Kharga oasis (180 km), with stops on the way:
Balat: medieval village with typical charm, with streets painted blue and covered to protect against possible enemy incursions.
The Montagne des Anglais: former British camp from the Second World War. Graffiti and military remains can still be seen.
Teneda: a fascinating desert place, with dunes, rock formations and caves decorated with prehistoric drawings depicting giraffes, antelopes and birds.
Arrival at the Kharga oasis at the end of the day.
Check-in, dinner and overnight at the hotel
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure in a 4x4 for a day of safari through the wild landscapes.
Outside the oasis, the dunes take over, undulating as far as the eye can see.
Exploration of Roman and Christian remains on ancient caravan routes:
Deir el-Munira: Christian monastery built on a Roman fortress, with a mud-brick temple.
Qasr el-Dabaschiya: temple, dovecote and ancient tombs, inhabited until the twentieth century.
um el-Dabadib: Roman city with fortress, Egyptian temple, Christian church, necropolises and ingenious irrigation system.
Qasr el-Labakha: located on an old road to Assiut. This site contains two temples, a cemetery, underground aqueducts and a spring of sulphurous water reputed to regenerate.
Lunch in the middle of nature.
Traditional dinner and night in bivouac under the stars.
Breakfast, then morning of discoveries:
The Temple of Hibis: dating from the 26th dynasty, it illustrates Pharaonic, Persian, Ptolemaic and Roman influences. Very well preserved, it bears witness to the evolution of cults in Egypt.
Bagawat Cemetery: One of the oldest Christian sites in Egypt with 236 adobe vaulted tombs. Among them the tomb of the Exodus: frescoes representing the flight from Egypt and the tomb of Peace: religious scenes with Jacob, Saint Paul, Saint Takla and the Virgin Mary.
